Strawberry Custard Torte
1 pkg yellow cake mix
1/3 C sugar
1 TB cornstarch
1/8 tsp. salt
1 C. milk
2 egg yolks, slightly beaten
1 TB. butter
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 carton Cool Whip
1 pt. stawberries, sliced
Prepare and bake cake according to package directions, using 2 greased and floured 9" round baking pans. Cool 10 minutes and then remove from pans. Finish cooling on wire racks.
In a saucepan, combine the sugar, cornstarch and salt; gradually stir in milk until smooth. Bring to a boil over medium heat; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Remove from heat. Stir in a small amount of hot filling into egg yolks; return all to pan, stiring constantly. Bring to a gentle boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat. Stir in butter and vanilla. Cover and refrigerate until chilled.
Place half of the Cool Whip in a bowl; add all of the strawberries (hold back a few for garnish). Split each cake into 2 horizontal layers; place one layer on a serving platter. Spread with half of the strawberry mixture. Top with a second cake layer; spread with custard. Add 3rd layer; spread with remaining strawberry mixture. Top with remaing cake and whipped topping. Refrigerate overnight. Garnish with strawberries. Yield 12 servings
This kit allows you and your Mother to prepare for your party together. If you are able, deliver your invitations in person with a pretty flower and a request for each guest to bring a picture of her and her Mom together. You might want to mention a certain size (depending on the picture frames you purchase). You could also take pictures at your party with a Poloroid camera or have someone run out to an 1 hour photo developing center.
Use a pretty quilt for a tablecloth and dainty hankies make adorable napkins. Create a bouquet of flowers with blossoms that coordinate with the colors in your quilt. Silk flowers work great if fresh flowers are unavailable. Add some photos of Mothers and daughters in action to your table. The pictures could be in frames on the table or added to the centerpiece with wire photo holders.
Purchase small picture frames for each guest. Gather together a variety of craft supplies such as buttons, ribbons, ribbon flowers, silk flowers, charms and anything else you can think of. Have your guests decorate their picture frames. You could add a strong magnet to the back of your picture frame and place on the refrigerator. To glue your items to your frames you could use Tacky glue if you have time for the glue to set or hot glue if your guests are old enough to use a glue gun with adult supervision.
While your picture frames are drying, serve Tea. During your Tea ask each guest to share a special moment she experienced with her Mother.
